Family Movie Night

Foundation

On Friday the 12th of October, all of Foundation went on an excursion to Bundoora Farm. At the farm we had lots of hands on experiences; we patted goats, sheep, chickens, guinea pigs, roosters and ducks. We got to milk a cow, and use cream, lemonade and flour to create some delicious scones that we enjoyed at the end of the day. What a wonderful and very busy day we had together!

Grade 2

Being Brave Incursion

On the 10th of October we had an incursion run by Brainstorm Production ‘Being Brave’. They gave students strategies to deal with emotions through good communication, persistence and positive self-talk-making them more resilient. They watched an inspiring show that used songs, dance and drama to bounce back after dealing with bullying, loss and change.

Hey Little Ant- Persuasive Writing

Grade 2B students explored the book ‘Hey Little Ant’ by Phillip and Hanna Hoose. After reading the book, students used their persuasive skills by trying to convince the boy in the book not to squish the ant. Below are pictures of grade 2B students enjoying writing their persuasive text.

Latitude

This term the year 2 students are learning all about forces and gravity through their push and pull unit in physical science. They will explore how the strength of a push or pull affects how an object moves. To enhance this new knowledge while promoting healthy lifestyle through fun, year 2 students visited Latitude. The students were able to get firsthand experience of the strength of a push or a pull and its effect on themselves.

Guided Reading

Guided reading is where teachers work with a small number of children to analyse a text in detail, making sure each child can read each word. Generally, teachers need to think about two things when carrying out a guided reading session: decoding and comprehension.

Decoding means literally turning a written word into a spoken word, regardless of whether the meaning of that word has been understood. Teachers will teach children how to decode by encouraging them to split a word up and sound out all the separate sounds. They may also ask them to look at the picture to help them. Another strategy is to read the whole sentence to them, missing out the word they have struggled with, then asking them to work out what the word could be, based on what they have heard of the rest of the sentence.

Comprehension means understanding what has been read and being able to talk or write about it.

Once the students read with the teacher, they are generally provided with comprehension activities.

Grade 3

In class with 3A completed a shadow experiment to investigate and understand the relationship between the Earth and the Sun. We found that the Sun moved throughout the day from East to West. Our shadows were shortest around midday, because the Sun was almost overhead before fading away to the horizon. It was hard to understand that the Earth is moving and not the Sun, but we got there in the end through physical experimentation and role play.

Grade 3B’s experience with the ‘Wild Action, The Zoo Comes To You!’ Incursion

During Term 4 the Grade 3 Biological Science Unit explores Fur, Feathers and Leaves. Students have been learning about the differences between living, non-living and once living things. We organised an incursion through ‘Wild Action, The Zoo Comes To You!’ for the students to get an opportunity to have first hand experience with some of Australia’s most unique animals. The presentation was called Australian Animals, and it provided students with an interactive experience to enhance their learning about our Feathered and Furry friends - their anatomy, habitats and the roles they play in ecosystems. Congratulations to all 3B students who were extremely brave to get up close with all of these incredible creatures.

Grade 3’s Scienceworks Excursion

On Wednesday the 17th of October, Grade 3 students spent their day at Scienceworks to revise their Term 3 learnings on the Solar System. Our students had the opportunity to explore a range of exhibitions including the Sportsworks and Think Ahead. The students all participated in a well mannered approach and with great enthusiasm. In the afternoon the students viewed a show on the Earth, Moon and Sun before returning to school. We all had a very exciting and educational day. Well done grade 3’s.

Grade 5

This year was breathtaking and impressive. I never thought I’d learn so much in just 365 days. All our teachers simplified everything for us and made everything so easy for us. This year was very pleasurable and informative. People around us have been assisting us a lot and have made us successful. This year by far, is the most supreme and I can’t help but think what I’d do after this year finishes. I have had an exceptionally good year with all my classmates and teachers. This year will never be forgotten and I will always treasure the memories. Thank you, everybody for allowing me to have a phenomenal year!
